Grand Walkerhill Seoul stands on the lower slope of Mount Achasan, at the eastern edge of Gwangjin-gu, with the Han River below it. The casino occupies the basement level of the hotel and has been operating since 1968, which makes it the oldest venue of its kind in the country. On the floor

The room is set out the way a long-established venue tends to be — table games grouped together, electronic gaming arranged along their own sections, and enough space between them that you can stand and watch for a while before deciding anything. It runs twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year, which matters more than it sounds: there is no closing time to work around, so an early arrival and a late one are equally workable.

Staff work in English, Japanese and Mandarin. This is the practical reason the venue has held onto its international regulars for as long as it has, and it is worth knowing in advance if it is your first visit to a Korean casino. Nobody expects you to know the room, and asking at the entrance is ordinary.

There are quieter separate rooms for guests who prefer them. What is available varies by day, and the staff at the entrance will tell you what is open.

Entry, and the thing people forget

Entry is for foreign passport holders aged 19 and over. Korean nationals are not admitted. This comes from national law rather than house policy, so nobody at the door has discretion over it.

Bring the passport itself. It is checked at the entrance to confirm nationality, and a photograph on a phone, a mobile identification app or a foreign driving licence will not stand in for it. The usual stumble is small and avoidable: people leave the passport in a hotel safe because they are only going out for the evening. Those two times are worth writing down, because the casino runs around the clock and the shuttle does not. A finish after the last departure means a taxi down the hill, which is exactly what the reimbursement is there for. Walking up from either station is possible and some people do it, but the slope is steeper than a map suggests.

By taxi from Seoul Station, allow about thirty minutes and a fare of roughly ₩15,000 to ₩20,000. The route follows the river, which is pleasant outside rush hour and slow inside it. The eastern riverside

Mount Achasan rises directly behind the hotel and its trail is the reason the neighbourhood wakes up early. The climb is modest by Korean standards and the ridge opens out over the river towards the centre of the city. Local walkers fill it at first light and again around sunset, and it is the sort of walk you can do in trainers before breakfast.

The Han River paths run below the hotel in both directions, for walking and for cycling. The stretch heading east is quieter than the sections nearer the centre, and in summer the riverside fills in the evening with families and people who have simply come out for the air.

The Konkuk University area is ten minutes away by taxi and is where the neighbourhood eats — a student district, open late, priced accordingly, and a good counterweight to a hotel dinner. Children's Grand Park, with its zoo and botanical garden, is a similar distance and works for families travelling together.

Before you go

Smart-casual clothing is enough. There is no formal requirement, though beachwear and slippers sit outside what is expected.

Large luggage goes to the cloakroom rather than onto the floor, and professional cameras and recording equipment are stored there as well. If you are arriving straight from a flight, or heading out to one afterwards, this is the detail worth planning around.
